Xiaguan Sheng Pu-erh (Raw Pu-erh) Tuocha 2005, 100g | Dali, Yunnan
Description
An aged raw pu-erh tuocha from the Xiaguan Tea Factory in Dali, Yunnan, the house most closely associated with the bowl-shaped tuocha format. Pressed in 2005, it now has more than two decades of storage behind it, and you can see it straight away in the very dark leaf.
At only 100 g, the tuocha is pressed extremely tight in the classic Xiaguan style. Even the slightly worn, old-school wrapper adds to its charm.
With aged sheng like this, the sharp bitterness of youth has given way to a deeper, drier, woodier and calmer profile. The tight compression means it opens slowly, so give it a rinse and let the first infusions run a little longer. Expect aged wood and dried fruit, a light camphor and gentle smoky note typical of aged Xiaguan, and a returning sweetness in the throat.
A characterful piece of aged Xiaguan for anyone curious about what twenty years do to a raw pu-erh, and a fine collector's tuocha.
