Jin Xuan (Milk Oolong) Oolong Tea 2026, 25g | Taiwan
Description
Jin Xuan (金萱) is one of the best-known Taiwanese oolong cultivars, bred by the Taiwan Tea Research and Extension Station and released in 1981 as Tai Cha No. 12. Growers still call it "27" (二七仔) after its trial number. It is famous for a natural creamy, milky note in the cup, which is why it is often sold in the West as "milk oolong". Offered loose in 25 g packs.
The milky character comes from the cultivar and its processing, not from added milk or flavouring. Expect a lightly oxidised, rolled oolong with a pale golden-green liquor, a soft floral aroma and a smooth, buttery-creamy texture with gentle sweetness and very little bitterness. The milk note is subtle rather than dessert-like, and shows best when the tea is brewed with care.
Jin Xuan is best gongfu style or Taiwanese style, where the tightly rolled leaves open slowly over many short infusions, but it is also easy and forgiving in a Western pot. Use water slightly below boiling to keep the cup soft and sweet.
A gentle, approachable oolong that suits newcomers and is a favourite everyday tea for many experienced drinkers. Smooth, creamy and floral, it is a good first step into the world of Taiwanese oolongs.
